I know many people complain about the shortening daylight hours beginning in autumn (in the Northern Hemisphere). Personally I like observing the changing of the seasons. Each time has beauty of its own. I like this cozy season and I’ve been enjoying this lamp in the dark mornings. It has a glow that is very different when no other light is present.

It’s hard to find darkness in populated areas. We have our porch lights come on at dusk along with a lamppost. That’s for safety reasons. (Deliveries sometimes come in the wee hours of the morning!) But I do like dark. I was never one of those kids afraid of the dark. In fact, I had to have no lights on to sleep when I was a kid and I haven’t completely outgrown that.
I read a book several years ago titled Learning to Walk in the Dark by Barbara Brown Taylor. I admit, I don’t often think about books after I’ve read them, but this one has stuck with me. From the Amazon description:
Through darkness we find courage, we understand the world in new ways, and we feel God’s presence around us, guiding us through things seen and unseen. Often, it is while we are in the dark that we grow the most.
Light is vital for life. Jesus said he is, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.” John 8:12 ESV
But darkness is a part of our world. Jesus, in my understanding, is the way we can walk in the darkness.
Even so, darkness doesn’t mean God isn’t present. The very beginning of the Bible:
1 In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth. 2 The earth was without form and void, and darkness was over the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters.
3 And God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light. -Genesis 1:1-3 ESV (emphasis mine)
Have you ever gazed at the night sky? The moon and stars? Northern Lights? If you have I’m guessing you didn’t think to yourself that darkness is nothing but evil.
It’s a season of rest and wonder.
